One of the most overlooked risks in diving is hypercapnia (excessive production and accumulation of CO2), which can lead to narcosis and discomfort, especially during deeper dives and under challenging or strenuous conditions.
The GUE Deep Primer course can be conducted using Nitrox 32 or Triox 30/30 and teaches divers how gas selection impacts their performance at depth, how to plan deeper dives, and how to maintain control during descents and ascents.
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
Diving in more demanding conditions—whether deeper dives, complex project dives, or executing strenuous or complicated tasks—requires a high mental capacity from all team members.
Divers who aspire to participate in ambitious projects or challenge themselves with dives under demanding conditions should consider using a helium-based breathing gas to make their dives safer and more comfortable. The Deep Primer course also serves as excellent preparation for deeper dive training, as it introduces and practices ascent protocols.
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
The course content includes:
- Skill development and refinement.
- Theory and practice of decompression.
- Proper ascent procedures and exercises.
- The use of helium to minimize narcosis, CO2 buildup, gas density, and post-dive "nitrogen stress."
REQUIREMENTS AND DURATION
Participants in the GUE Deep Primer course must:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Be physically and mentally fit.
- Be non-smokers.
- Be able to swim.
- Provide written approval from a doctor if taking prescription medications (except contraceptives) or if a medical condition exists that could pose a risk while diving.
- Have completed the GUE Open Water Diver (Rec 1) course, the GUE Performance Diver course, or a GUE Fundamentals course.
- Have logged at least 15 dives after completing one of the above prerequisites.

The Deep Primer course is typically conducted over two days. It includes at least four dives and requires a minimum of 12 hours of instruction, combining classroom theory, land exercises, and practical water sessions.
This course can also be completed as part of the GUE Advanced Open Water Diver program.
If desired, the course can be conducted as an individual course for €500.00.
