For enthusiastic divers, expanding your experience is a natural progression. For GUE-trained dive teams, environmental awareness is one of the most important skills. Knowing where you are and how to navigate underwater enhances your comfort and confidence, enabling you to conduct safe dives as a team.
The GUE Navigation Primer is a course that teaches you the basics of underwater navigation using both compass techniques and natural navigation methods.
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
Every independent diver should have the ability to navigate dive sites. This course is recommended before enrolling in the Documentation Diver, Scientific Diver, or especially the Rescue Diver Primer, as the latter requires proficiency in navigation.
The Navigation Primer also prepares you for dives in low-light conditions (e.g., night dives).
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
The course content includes:
- Compass use and navigation (basic and advanced).
- Natural navigation techniques.
- Fundamental navigation strategies.
- Handling a spool as a guide line underwater.
REQUIREMENTS AND DURATION
Participants in the GUE Navigation Primer must:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Be physically and mentally fit.
- Be non-smokers.
- Be able to swim.
- Provide written approval from a doctor if taking prescription medications (except contraceptives) or if a medical condition exists that could pose a risk while diving.
- Have completed the GUE Recreational Diver 1 course or a GUE Fundamentals course at the "recreational" level.
- Have logged at least 25 non-training dives.

The Navigation Primer is typically conducted over two days. It includes at least three dives (one of which takes place in low-light conditions) and requires a minimum of 12 hours of instruction, including classroom theory, land exercises, and practical work in the water.
This course can also be completed as part of the GUE Advanced Open Water Diver program.
If desired, the course can be conducted as an individual course for €500.00.
